"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are
powerful beyond measure."
-Mariane Williamson

Subversive Theatre is proud to present for the sixth installment of our annual "Subversive Youth Series," AKEELAH AND THE BEE adapted for the stage by Cheryl L. West from the famous screenplay by Doug Atchison. Our rendition is performed entirely by young emerging actors of the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Spelling Bees are typically a place for privileged kids from privileged families and snooty schools.  But one determined young girl from the South Side of Chicago is out to prove that you don't have to be white, wealthy, and over-educated to achieve.  On her inspiring quest for knowledge, Akeelah finds the courage to stand up against the racism and class-ism of our world and overcome the limitations that have held far too many back.  It is an empowering reminder that a sharp mind can be your most powerful weapon when the deck is stacked against you.

"The people we are studying: DuBois, Dr. King, JFK,
these people used words to change the world.
And they didn't acquire their vocabulary through
rote memorization."
-Dr. Larabie

Directed by the director of our "Subversive Youth Program" Kelly M. Beuth*, our production is performed by emerging high school-aged actors from the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts.  It stars Aqueelah Howard, Kyra Rowsey, Shalya James, Nahiem Paris, Mariah Faulkner, Taylor Butler, Katara Willis, Casey Appenheimer, Dre'Quan Johnson, Steven Luangpakdy, Jessica Peguero, Tellulah Gordon, Raivonne Davis, Isabelle Trump, Molly Lewars, and Michaela James.

Lighting Design is by Subversive Theatre's Founder & Artistic Director Kurt Schneiderman*, with Set Design by Michael Lodick*, and Set Painting by J. Tim Raymond*.  Costumes, Sound & Set Pieces are by Kelly M. Beuth*.

AKEELAH AND THE BEE runs June 15th through the 25th with performances Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7pm.  All shows are at Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building

Tickets are $12.00 general admission or $8.00 for students with I.D.  Admission for both Wednesday shows is pay-what-you-can.  Purchase tickets online right here at our site or call 716-408-0499 to make reservations.  Reservatioins will be held until five minutes before performance time.

"You know, Akeelah, you ain't short on people
who want to help you.  I bet if you just
look around, you got 50,000 coaches."
-Tanya Anderson

Every year we are excited to see our "Subversive Youth Series" continue to expand and grow.  We launched the program in 2011 to give young and aspiring theatre artist the chance to get some real world theatre experience presenting plays that speak out on the controversial issues facing young people today.  Over the years we've been proud to present:

TICK, TICK,... BOOM!  by Jonathan Larsen (2011)
BANG, BANG, YOU'RE DEAD  by William Mastrosimone (2012)
FOUR LITTLE GILRS: BIRMINGHAM 1963 (for the 50th anniversary of Baptist Church bombing)  by Christina Ham (2013)
THE SECRET LIFE OF GIRLS  by Linda Daugherty (2014)
EMOTIONAL CREATURE  by Eve Ensler (2015)

Don't miss this latest installment of this always-empowering experience!
