FOUR STARS!!!
"Director Rebecca Ward... gets every last drop of blood, sweat, and tears from her cast -- one that's unforgettable -- and lets the story tell itself...
The production is superb."

For the sixth show in our 11th Season at Subversive Theatre, we're honored to join forces with Raices Theatre Company to present one of the most powerful works of political theatre ever written -- DEATH AND THE MAIDEN by Chile's world renown Human Rights champion Ariel Dorfman.

Set in the immediate aftermath of a military junta's reign in an un-named Latin America country, this savagely intense masterpiece tells the story of a former political prisoner who comes face-to-face with the man she THINKS was responsible for her rape and torture.

"If he's innocent, then he's really screwed."
                              -Paulina

How far dare she go in search of justice before she destroys herself and those around her?  How can she ever know for certain who's really to blame?  How long must the victims be the ones to "forgive and forget" as the tyrants get away with murder?

Winner of the 1992 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, this fierce three-character drama offers no easy answers... but, instead, takes audiences on a gut-wrenchingly beautiful journey into the hearts of both victim AND the accused victimizer to see the world through the eyes of both rage and self-doubt.

"A person can die from excessive doses of the truth."
                              -Gerardo

While other renditions of DEATH AND THE MAIDEN have featured high profile white actors such as Gene Hackman, Glenn Close, Richard Dreyfuss, Sigourney Weaver, and Sir Ben Kingsley, we're proud to recapture this play's Hispanic roots with a cast that features three of Buffalo's most talented and respected Latino actors: Victor Morales, Rolando Gomez+, and Raices' Artistic Director Victoria Perez*+ under the direction of Subversive troupe member Rebecca Ward*.

This production is also graced by live musical performances by internationally-traveled instrumentalist Moshe Shulman.  Set Design is by Tim Lane with Sound Design by Subversive's resident sound-ista John Shotwell* and Lighting Design by Scotty Franklin.

Our production of DEATH AND THE MAIDEN runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm from May 22 - June 14, 2014.  All performances are in Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building.  Tickets are $25 general admission or $20 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.  Admission for all Thursday shows is pay-what-you-can.
