"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

"Don't mourn, organize!"  Those are the immortal words of one of the great martyrs of American union movement, Joe Hill.  A radical union organizer and songwriter for the I.W.W. (the Industrial Workers of the World also known as "The Wobblies"), Joe Hill was framed and executed by the State of Utah in Salt Lake City on November 19th, 1915.  His revolutionary songs, his defiant spirit, and his unjust execution have been a rallying cry for working people ever since.

For the 10th installment of our annual "Workers' Power Play Series," Subversive Theatre is honored to mark the 100-year-anniversary of the death of this blue collar icon with a new one-man show by veteran author/composer/civil rights activist Si Kahn.  This short drama shows us the condemned man -- up close and personal -- just hours before his execution smoldering with outrage, bristling with fiery barbs and homespun humor, and eager to share his inspiring union ballads one last time.

Rich with live music and song, JOE HILL'S LAST WILL is an intense, empowering journey that proudly keeps alive the revolutionary spirit that built the union movement we know today.

"Working folks of all countries unite,
side by side we for free shall fight,
when this world and it's wealth we have gained,
to the rafters we'll sing this refrain"

-Joe Hill, lyrics from The Preacher and the Slave

Directed by Jeffrey Coyle*, our rendition stars John Profeta as the infamous rabble rouser with musical accompaniment by Kathleen Godwin, Musical Direction by Billy Horn, Set Design by Tom Izard*, Lighting Design by Michael Lodick*, Sound Design by Brian Zybala*, and Costume Design by Maureen Denton*.  Illustrations by J. Tim Raymond*, photography by Kurt Schneiderman*.

JOE HILL'S LAST WILL runs November 5th - 28th with performances Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm.  All shows are in our regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building.

Tickets are $25 general admission or $20 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.  As always, on Thursdays, admission is pay-what-you-can.  Tickets can be purchased online at, telephone reservations can be made at 716-408-0499.

"Time to form the O.B.U. -- the One Big Union!"
                                                             -Joe Hill

We are thrilled to present this show simultaneously with a performance in the very city where Joe Hill met his date with destiny 100 years ago.  Grammy Award-nominated folk musician John McCutcheon is currently performing a West Coast tour of JOE HILL'S LAST WILL which will culminate with an appearance in Salt Lake City precisely 100 years after Joe Hill's unjust execution at the hands of the State of Utah and its capitalist paymasters.
