"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

-Howard Zinn

"Do you think I care about a rapist who found Jesus!?!"

Subversive Theatre is proud to present the unflinching abortion rights drama KEELY AND DU by Jane Martin.  This white-knuckled tale follows two Right-to-Life extremists and the pregnant woman they have kidnapped to stop from having an abortion.  Chained to a gurney, rape victim Keely is left with nothing but her sheer determination to resist her abductors.  But as this battle of wills spins further and further out of control, the battle lines only get more blurry.  Fear, tenderness, faith, compassion, love, hate, trust, and fanatacism swirl into a dizzying whirlwind as both sides are forced to face their demons.

KEELY AND DU premiered as a "ripped from the headlines" new play at the 1993 Humana Festival in Kentucky, it won the American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award and was a finalist for the 1994 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.  Over twenty years later, it's sad to find that this play is STILL ALL TOO RELEVANT as the struggle for a women's right to choose is constantly under siege.  Nowadays the battle has -- mostly -- moved off the front page and behind closed doors as rights have been steadily legislated away.  The door is closing on decent health care and access to abortion for millions of women throughout this country as clinics and hospitals are increasingly de-funded and/or privatized.

"Sometimes you have to revenge before you forgive."

Subversive Theatre is proud to keep alive the fight for these vital rights with our production directed by theater veteran Toni Smith Wilson.  The cast features Subversive Theatre's Associate Artistic Director Kelly Beuth*, Kate Olena, Jack Agugliaro*, and Michael Starzynski*.  Set Design is by Christopher Wilson with Sound Design by John Shotwell*, Lighting Design by Michael Lodick*, and Costume Design by Maureen Denton*.  Illustrations by J. Tim Raymond* and photos by Kurt Schneiderman*.

KEELY AND DU runs January 14th - February 6th, 2016 with shows Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm.  All shows are in our regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building.

"The baby isn't rape, Keely.  The baby is a baby."
        Tickets are $25 general admission
or $20 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.  As always, all Thursday shows are pay-what-you-can.
