"How do you make people's suffering thousands of miles away matter?  How do you make this world, this life, in all its mystery and injustice, matter?
Maybe this is the purpose of art, and theater in particular -- to experience what we experience, to see what's in front of us, to allow the truth in, with all its sorrow and brutality, because in the theater we are not alone in our worried and stained beds.  We are there, for these moments together, joined by what we see and hear, made stronger, hopefully, by what opens us."

NECESSARY TARGETS is a powerful psychological drama on the devastating effects of rape, murder, and dehumanization experienced by women war refugees of the 1990s Yugoslavian Civil War.  Inspired by a series of interviews of  Bosnian women conducted by the author in the immediate aftermath of the conflict, NECESSARY TARGETS is a stunning, unflinching, and empowering testament to the emotional toll suffered by some of war's most undeserving victims.

About the Brazen Faced Varlets

"When we think of war," Ensler writes in the introduction to her play, "we think of it as something that happens to men."  The focus is on bombs and the immediate destruction that they wreak.  "But after the bombing," she explains, "that's when the real war begins."

Author of the wildly famous play THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, Eve Ensler is undoubtedly one of the most important writers on women's issues in the world today.  An important addition to her body of work, NECESSARY TARGETS speaks with beautiful mixture of humanity and brutal honesty on one of the most horrifying cases of ethnic cleansing since the Second World War.

Directed by Subversive Theatre's Overall Dramaturg Susan Forbes*, our rendition of NECESSARY TARGETS features members of the women's acting troupe The Brazen Faced Varlets.  The cast features Jane Cudmore, Lara Haberberger*+, Kelly Beuth*+, Jane Cudmore*, Heather Fangsrud*+, Theresa DiMuro-Wilber, Brittany Kucala*, and Martha Rothkopf*.

Set Design is by Sue Franclemont with Sound Design by John Shotwell*, and Lighting Design by Joan Golda & Kurt Schneiderman*.

Performances run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm from April 8th - 30th (please note: no performance on Friday, April 23rd) at Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue "The Manny Fried Playhouse" on the third floor of North Buffalo's Great Arrow Building at 255 Great Arrow Avenue.

Tickets are $15 general admission or $10 for students, seniors and Subversive Theatre Members.  For all Thursday performances, admission is pay-what-you-can.  Reservations are not available, seating is on a first-come-first-served basis with doors opening one half hour prior to each performance.
