Journey with us into the abyss.  Break through the taboo of mental illness.  Come away with an understanding of depression.  Know what it is like to fight for your life against the toughest foe, your own mind.  It’s time to wake from our psychosis and look depression and suicide in the face.

4:48 PSYCHOSIS was the last play written by controversial British author Sarah Kane only days before she committed suicide at London's King's College Hospital where she was being treated for severe depression.  This raw and unflinching work offers a rare and empassioned glimpse into the mind of someone battling suicidal thoughts . . . as well as a unique opportunity to appreciate the tortured existence of the 8%-12% of our society who suffer from depression.

With a script as daring and challenging as its subject matter, 4:48 PSYCHOSIS does not specify the number of characters, who should speak which lines, or how the play is to be set.  So we have called upon experimental Director Brian Zybala* (who crafted our previous productions of OUROBOROS and '84) and the acting talents of Rebecca Ward* to throw audiences into Kane’s world without judgment but with purpose.  Audience members will learn that depression is real and not something you can just “get over,” but a lifelong and sometimes life ending battle.

Kane’s words flow and jump in a poetic nightmare.  Whether you are interested in the debate over medicating depression, want to know how a family member has felt, need to know that you are not alone, or just want an evening of theatre that is on the cutting edge; 4:48 PSYCHOSIS will not disappoint.  Depression lives and grows in the darkness, help us bring it into the light.

4:48 PSYCHOSIS runs February 18th - March 13th with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm at Subversive Theatre’s regular performance venue, The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo’s Great Arrow Building.  Tickets are $18 general admission or $13 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.   For all Sunday performances, admission is on a pay-what-you-can basis.
