"Life is a struggle. It's cowardly not to put up a fight."
For the eleventh annual Buffalo "infringement" Festival, Subversive Theatre is excited to
present perhaps the greatest work of Absurdist Theatre, RHINOCEROS by Eugene Ionesco.
Since it first debuted in 1959, this deliberately preposterous tale has
stood out as a half-comic deadly serious battle cry of the individual against
the stampede of conformity.
In a world where everyone is turning --
one by one -- into inhuman brutes, who can find the courage to stand against
the insanity? This brilliantly
universal farce with obvious implications from Auschwitz to Abu Graib rings
out with just as much jeering venom today as ever.
For almost six decades now, RHINOCEROS
has attracted extraordinary artists -- Orson Welles, Sir Laurence Olivier,
Joan Plowright, Jean Stapleton, Zero Mostel, and even Gene Wilder -- and
become an inspiration to anti-authoritarians, gadflies, rabble-rousers, and
truculent individualists the world over.
one does harm without meaning to, or rather one allows it to go unchecked."
Subversive Theatre is proud to add our own
outlandish interpretation to the many permutations of this defiantly
anti-classic classic. Director Albert Falcone*'s pared-down vision of the play emphasizes the comic
absurdity while crafting an intense orgy for the senses out of stylized
movement choreographed by Monica Karwan*
and an enveloping mise-en-scene courtesy of Set Designer Tim Lane, Costume Designer Tami Hopersberger*, Sound Designer Emily
DiMartino, and Artie Award-winning Lighting Designer Kurt Schneiderman*.
The cast features the acting talents of Rick
Lattimer, John Vines, Haley Keeley, Jacob Sauer, Sara Kovacsi, Virginia
Brannon*, Murry Galloway*, J. Tim
Raymond*, Corinne McLaughlin, and Peter-Mark

We are proud to present this play as part
of the 2015 Buffalo "infringement" Festival and their
incomparable eleven days of 'art
under the radar.' Our
production runs with the festival for the first two weeks and then continues
for two bonus weeks of infringy subversion and subversive infringement.
In addition to RHINOCEROS,
we are proud to welcome a long list of daring projects into our performance
space throughout the run of this summer's "infringement"
Festival from July 23rd - August 2nd.
For more information on these projects, check out the Festival's website at www.infringebuffalo.org.
