"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

"I wish I was the one who died.
THEN maybe I could have got some justice."
-Trayvon Martin

For the seventh installment of our "Black Power Play Series," Subversive Theatre is honored to present the world debut of THE TRIAL OF TRAYVON MARTIN by Buffalo's award-winning author Gary Earl Ross*.  This inventive new drama cuts to the heart of some of the most explosive issues facing our country with an alternate version of recent history.

Five years after the death of the real life Trayvon Martin,  this original Two Act play blends the urgency of protest theatre with the intensity of courtroom drama and the creative bite of historical fiction by asking a series of WHAT IFs.  What if it was George Zimmerman who died that fateful night in Florida in 2012?  What if it was Trayvon Martin who went on trial for murder?  How would the same jury that acquited Zimmerman in real life react to the same "stand-your-ground" defense on the lips of a 17-year-old black man?  How badly are the scales of justice tipped in this land?  This hypothetical tale looks at the brutal reality of American racial injustice from a fresh and unrelenting angle.

"He's a child who had a fight with a grown man who
followed him, a man with a gun!"

-Tracy Martin

Directed by Subversive Theatre's Founder & Artistic Director Kurt Schneiderman*, our rendition features the acting talents of Brian Brown, Shawnell Tillery, Kunji Rey, Rick Lattimer*, Lawrence Rowswell*, Leon Copeland*, Kajana Stover, Brittany Bassett, and Michael Mottern*.  Set Design is by Chris Wilson* with Costume Design by resident costumier Maureen Caputo*, Sound Design by resident soundologist John Shotwell*, and Lighting Design by Hasheen DeBerry*.

THE TRIAL OF TRAYVON MARTIN runs April 6th - May 6th with performances Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm.  All shows are in our regular performance venue The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building.

"The fear continues and slithers beneath our skin.
How many more children will be shot holding toy guns?
How many will be shot in the back or die from mistaken identity?"

-Imani Fairchild

This production marks the third time that Subversive Theatre has been the launch pad for Gary Earl Ross'* theatrical creations.  The first two -- THE GUNS OF CHRISTMAS (2014) and THE MARK OF CAIN (2016) -- both won the Artie Award for Best New Play.  A novelist, journalist, playwright, and veteran educator, Ross* became an Associate Artistic Director with our troupe in 2015.  All of us at Subversive Theatre are proud to see our partnership with this subversive local artists continue to grow.  Don't miss the latest installment of Ross' ever-expanding list of powerhouse protest works.

Tickets are $30.00 general admission or $25.00 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre members.  As always, all Thursday shows are pay-what-you-can.
