"The Arts are the locale for a kind of guerilla warfare . . . they're subtle so the Establishment gambles that they won't lead to anything threatening.
But the Establishment often loses that gamble."

"It was 1954.  The Time of the Great Fear.  The Time of the Toad... otherwise known as the Great American Inquisition."
                                                             -Danny #1

For the sixth show in our twelfth season, we're honored to present what just may be our most important production yet.  THE UN-AMERICAN pays tribute to the man known as "the Most Dangerous Man in Western New York" -- blacklisted labor leader, actor, playwright, and activist Emanuel "Manny" Fried.  Under development since Manny passed away in 2011 -- just days before his 98th birthday -- this all-too-true drama serves as an empowering testament to all those who found the courage to stand up against McCarthyism.

Adapted for the stage by Buffalo playwright Anna Kay France from Manny Fried's book of the same title, THE UN-AMERICAN tells the story of Manny's extraordinary stand against the House on Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and the devastating effects of McCarthyism on his life, his family, and his battle for Buffalo's unions.  Set in 1954 at a time when Manny represented over 100,000 workers in Western New York as an organizer for the radical union United Electric (UE), this stream-of-consciousness story keeps alive an important chapter in Buffalo's labor history with some unmistakable lessons for today.

We'd all like to believe we'd stand up for our convictions no matter what the cost.  Most of us will never know how well we'd hold out if it really came down to it.  Here's the story of someone who really faced that challenge.  Find out what it did to him as a man, as a husband, as a father, and as a union leader.  You don't know the full story of McCarthyism if you haven't seen THE UN-AMERICAN

"I'm not going to let a couple of small-minded bureaucrats for a couple of lousy greenbacks destroy the Constitution which I fought and bled for!"
                                                             -Bill Robinson

To bring to life this extraordinary new work, we're proud to have assembled an equally extraordinary team of artists.  THE UN-AMERICAN is directed by Greg Natale and stars Richard Lambert+, Guy Wagner+, and Lisa Vitrano amidst an ensemble that also features Tim Joyce, Jack Agugliaro*, Bonnie Jean Taylor, Mark John Donahue, J. Tim Raymond*, Lawrence Rowswell*, John Kennedy*, and John Strong*.  Set Design is by the director himself with Sound Design by Brian Zybala*, Lighting Design by John Shotwell*, Costume Design by Maureen Denton, Video Design by Bob Van Valin*, and Props by Michelle Denton

THE UN-AMERICAN runs May 7th - 31st with performances Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm.  All shows are in Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue, the aptly named Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building.  Tickets can be purchased right here online.  Tickets are $25 General Admission or $20 for students, seniors, and Subversive Theatre Members.  As always, admission for all Thursday shows is pay-what-you-can.

"Sometimes you've just gotta go out there and fight the bastards."

We're honored to have this production sponsored by the Western New York Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, the Buffalo Teachers Federation, the Law Firm of Creighton, Johnsen, and Giroux Attorneys at Law, the Buffalo Co-operative Federal Credit Union, and the printing company Keller Brothers and Miller, Inc. -- the very same printing house that published Manny's book The Un-American exactly twenty years ago!
