"I am an anarchist.  I don't sue, I don't get injunctions, I advocate revolution, and when people ask me what can we do that's practical, I say, weakly, weaken the fabric of the system wherever you can, make possible the increase of freedom, all kinds."

WIDOWS is a stunningly powerful story of defiance in the face of crushing brutality and military dictatorship.
This epic three act play -- winner of the Kennedy Center's New American Plays Award, 1998 -- takes place in an unnamed Latin American country in a small village where all of the men have been dragged away by the forces of an unnamed military dictatorship.  The women of the village are left to eek out a desperate existence wondering, worrying, and waiting for news of their loved ones.
But when a reform-minded military officer announces his intention to usher in a new era of reconciliation and the town's half-crazed matriarch dares to speak out for justice, the situation quickly turns into an electrifying battle of truth vs. power.
Written by Chile's Pulitzer Prize-winning Playwright/Novelist Ariel Dorfman -- who himself narrowly escaped General Augusto Pinochet's 1973 military coup -- WIDOWS is a searing testament to the power of the most downtrodden of people to resist the most vicious repression.
Our production is directed by Subversive Theatre's Founder & Artistic Director Kurt Schneiderman* and features the acting talents of Arlene Clement, Victor Morales, Diane Gaidry, Sandra Gilliam*, Julian Perez, Jack Agugliaro*, Joy Scime, Justin Fiordaliso, Bethany Sparacio, Marisol Torres, Joanna Farrell, Jenna Winnett, Hanna Lipkind, Anthony Orlowski, and others.  Set & Lighting Design is by Jessica Fialko, with Sound Design by John Shotwell, Costume Design by Mindy Harrington, and Poster Design by Melissa Grosse.
Performances run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm from October 15 through November 7.  All shows are at Subversive Theatre's regular performance venue, "The Manny Fried Playhouse" on the third floor of North Buffalo's Great Arrow Building at 255 Great Arrow Avenue.
